We joyfully called our 'mother 'Momma'. It was a thing with black women; the word felt warmer and more inviting. I mean mother was fine but ‘Momma’ well, that's a totally different kind of mother...it carried a lot of stories, it told us she had been through hell so that the cold word 'mother' just didn't fit all of what that woman ... my mother went through .... So it was 'Momma’…I hear the statement 'I wish I had a momma' more than once... sometimes said as an insult with a sassy smirk because it was the name attached to black women, who for the most part, were considered.
